Fitzgerald cards first-round 70, as Tigers showcase deep roster at SAA Preview

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sophomore Maeve Fitzgerald carded a two-under-par 70 and senior Payton Burch posted a one-under-par 71 to finish first and second, respectively, after one round of the SAA Fall Classic. The Tigers finished first among seven teams after the opening round.

Sewanee posted a team score of 302 to take a four-stroke lead over Trinity after the opening round.

Competing as an individual, Fitzgerald started her round on No. 10. She carded a bogey on No. 12 before recording back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14 and 15. After a bogey to close out the back nine, the Meridian, Idaho, native made two birdies and seven pars to finish two-under-par for the round.

Burch started her round on No. 8 with a double bogey before responding with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 9 and 10. The Elgin, S.C., native added a bogey on No. 12 before recording birdies on Nos. 14 and 17. She then posted back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 before adding two bogeys and a par to finish one-under-par.

Anna Claire Gibson, Elizabeth Bowman, and Natalie Catapano all finished tied for eighth with five-over-par 77s. Gibson carded five bogeys, a double bogey, a triple bogey, and four birdies. Bowman recorded five bogeys and 13 pars, while Catapano posted two birdies, five bogeys, and two double bogeys.

Freshman Cat Gavin finished tied for 15th with a six-over-par 78. The Hilton Head, S.C., native recorded five bogeys and a double bogey, along with a birdie on No. 9.

Anna Louise Chesnut and Emilee Ferguson, both competing as individuals, finished tied for 25th. Chesnut carded three birdies and two bogeys, along with four double bogeys and a triple bogey. Ferguson posted eight bogeys and a double bogey with nine pars for a 10-over-par 82.

Rachel Waters finished tied for 30th with a 12-over-par 84. The sophomore recorded one birdie, five bogeys, and four double bogeys.

Olivia Bently, competing as an individual, finished with a 15-over-par 87, recording one birdie and five pars.

Lila Weaver, also competing as an individual, finished tied for 41st with a 17-over-par 89.
