Tigers sit in sixth after opening round at Golfweek October Classic

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maeve Fitzgerald shot a six-over-par 78 to tie for 13th individually, leading the Tigers to a sixth-place standing after the opening round of the Golfweek October Classic on Sunday afternoon at The Links at Sandestin in Destin, Fla.

Sewanee sits in sixth place as a team at 30-over par. Mary Hardin-Baylor leads the field at 13-over par, followed by UC Santa Cruz at 24-over par. UW-Eau Claire and Huntingdon are tied for third at 27-over par, while Trinity sits in fifth place at 28-over par, two strokes ahead of the Tigers.

Fitzgerald recorded seven pars on the front nine, with a double-bogey on hole seven and a bogey on hole nine to make the turn at three-over par. The sophomore added a bogey on hole 10 before recording a birdie on 11. She closed the round with four pars and three bogeys to finish with a 78.

Elizabeth Bowman shot a seven-over-par 79 and is tied for 21st. The sophomore recorded seven pars, a bogey and a double-bogey on the front nine. After making the turn, the College Grove, Tenn., native birdied hole 13 but followed with a double-bogey and two bogeys on holes 14-16. Bowman finished the back nine with four pars and a bogey.

Cat Gavin carded an eight-over-par 80 and is tied for 26th. The freshman made two bogeys and seven pars on the front nine to sit two-over par at the turn. She added a bogey, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey on the back nine to finish the round at eight-over par.

Natalie Catapano and Payton Burch each recorded a nine-over-par 81 and are tied for 32nd.

Catapano shot three-over par on the front nine with three bogeys. The Pacific Palisades, Calif., native opened the back nine with a birdie on hole 10 but added two double-bogeys and three bogeys, along with three pars, to finish with an 81.

Burch was two-over par through the front nine after recording bogeys on holes seven and nine. She added six consecutive bogeys on holes 11-16 and another on hole 18 to close the round at nine-over par.
