Phillips sits tied for fourth as Tigers sit in third at Tartan Invitational

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Niel Phillips shot an even-par 144 to tie for fourth place as the Sewanee men's golf team finished the opening day in third place among eight teams at the Tartan Invitational on Monday at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pa.

The Tigers carded a 13-over 589 through two rounds, sitting two strokes behind Kenyon in second place and one stroke ahead of John Carroll in fourth. Emory sits in first place with an even-par 576.

Phillips led the Tigers with matching rounds of even-par 72. The junior recorded four birdies in the opening round to finish at 72 before adding another even-par round in the afternoon. Phillips carded four birdies in the second round, including three consecutive birdies on holes five through seven, to finish the day tied for fourth.

James Doyle finished three-over-par 147 to tie for 14th. The freshman opened with an even-par 72, highlighted by an eagle on hole 18 and three consecutive birdies on holes one through three. Doyle followed with a three-over 75 in the second round, recording nine pars on the back nine before adding two birdies on holes six and seven on the front nine.

Jackson Lively carded a five-over 149 to tie for 27th. The Franklin, Tenn., native opened with a four-over 76 before improving by three strokes in the second round with a one-over 73. Lively recorded three birdies in the second round.

Drew Prieto finished the opening day tied for 54th with a 10-over 154. After carding an eight-over 80 in the first round, the Baton Rouge, La., native improved to a two-over 74 in the second round with two birdies.

Grant Caldwell rounded out the Sewanee lineup, tying for 62nd with a 12-over 156. The sophomore opened with a one-over 75 before carding a nine-over 81 in the second round.
