Colin Edwards carded a two-under par 70 and sophomore
Niel Phillips shot 73 for Sewanee on Tuesday in the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships on the El Campeon course at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
All of the Sewanee players started their rounds at No. 1. Only half the field completed their rounds Tuesday.
Edwards made a birdie on the par-5 on the first hole. The Brookhaven, Ga., native bogeyed holes two and three before stringing together six straight pars to make the turn. He shot three-under on the back nine with four pars, birdies on holes 10, 13, 14 and 17 and one bogey for his two-under 70.
Phillips posted even-par on the front nine with seven pars, one bogey and a birdie at No. 3. The New Orleans, La., native recorded eight pars and one bogey on the back for his one-over 73.
Freshman
Aidan Tudor birdied No. 2 but then collected three bogeys in a six-hole stretch. The New Market, Md., native started the back nine with a birdie and made seven pars with one bogey the rest of the way for a two-over 74.
Sophomore
Turner Chiles started the round with two bogeys in the first four holes before a birdie at No. 6. The Houston, Texas, native netted another bogey on eight. He registered six consecutive pars but made a double bogey on 15, a bogey at 17 and finished with a birdie on 18 for a four-over 76.
Senior
Elias Becker suffered through a difficult opening round that included four bogeys and three doubles. The Mexico City, Mexico, native shot three-over on the back nine with six pars and a birdie at No. 10 for an 81 on Tuesday.
