Laney Kalsu scored on a corner kick in the fourth minute, Katie Dullye's half-volley in the 76
th minute provided insurance and
Stella Martin assisted on both scores for Sewanee in a 2-0 victory over Maryville College in women's soccer action here Wednesday evening at Puett Field.
The Tigers (3-0-1) controlled possession for most of the contest and held a decided advantage in shots, 27-7, but led just 1-0 in the final 20 minutes despite continually pressuring the Scots back line. The second goal came on a free kick, with Martin delivering a line drive from down the left side toward the back post.
Dullye beat Maryville (1-4-0) goalkeeper Kristen Burns to the ball, half-volleying it into the open net, for the 2-0 advantage. Sewanee posted a 17-3 edge in shots in the second half, forcing eight saves in the period by Burns and 10 total in the match.
The Tigers scored in the fourth minute, with Kalsu heading in a corner kick from Martin for an early edge.
Sewanee got two other good chances, with
Pope Scurlock's shot from a tough angle down the right side hitting the side of the net in the 27
th minute. Then in the 37
th minute Josie Anderson's header hit the crossbar and Kalsu's rebound was saved by Burns.
The Tigers play again next Tuesday at Covenant College and return home September 20 for a Noon match against Greenville University.
