Three-run ninth gives Sewanee 5-4 win over LeTourneau

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn.Aidan Petrocco and Blake Pou each collected three hits and Sewanee scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth, the last two after a dropped fly ball, in a 5-4 victory over LeTourneau University in baseball action Friday night in Pensacola, Fla.

The Yellowjackets plated two runs in the first and another in the third before the Tigers got on the board with an RBI single from Pou in the fifth inning. Petrocco's RBI single in the seventh cut the deficit to 3-2 but LeTourneau picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth without the aid of a hit.

Will Jennewein singled to leadoff the bottom of the ninth for Sewanee and Owen Andress walked before Pou singled to left, scoring Jennewein. Both runners moved up when the ball was misplayed in leftfield and Petrocco was intentionally walked with one out, loading the bases.

Teel's fly ball to left was dropped, allowing pinch-runner James Lard and Pou to come across on the play, giving the Tigers a 5-4 win.

Jennewein finished with two hits and two runs scored while Teel added two hits. Sewanee starter Taj Donald worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out three.

Jack Merril and Childers Winn combined for three scoreless innings of relief and Austin Graber picked up the win, getting the final two outs in the ninth after LeTourneau scored a run and had the bases loaded.

Austin Wiederhold walked and Dane Jones singled through the right side to start the game for LeTourneau. Luke Land singled home a run and Jack Kale's sacrifice fly gave the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead after a half inning.

The Tigers tried to respond with singles by Petrocco and Teel but Tyler Pinson lined into a doubleplay to end the threat.

Wiederhold singled to leadoff the third and Land was hit with two outs. Kale then singled to center, plating the runner for a 3-0 LeTourneau edge.

Sewanee got a run back in the fifth after a one-out single by Jennewein and a walk to Andress. Pou then singled to center, plating a run, but Zach Fortman grounded into an inning-ending doubleplay.

Jennewein struck out to leadoff the seventh but reached on a passed ball. With one out Pou singled to right and Petrocco singled with two outs, plating Andress, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Teel grounded out to end the inning, though, leaving the Tigers down a run.

The Yellowjackets picked up an insurance run in the ninth without a hit after Zach Baker drew a leadoff walk and moved to second and third on wild pitches before scoring on a passed ball. Jones walked and Xander Nabors reached on an error before Land walked, but Graber came on to get a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning without any more damage.

Sewanee ends the event in Florida with a 5 p.m. contest Saturday against Carroll University.
