Zach Fortman posted three hits and three RBIs and
Charlie Teel drove in three runs but Edgewood College scored four runs in the first and held off a late rally for a 9-7 win over Sewanee on Tuesday night in Pensacola, Fla.
The Tigers (9-6) trailed 4-0 after an inning and 8-3 through six innings before Sewanee scored four times in the top of the eighth but grounded into a doubleplay with the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Edgewood added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning and Mark Tor got the final three outs for a save after a leadoff single in the ninth.
Ethan Williams and
John Bagwell collected two hits apiece and Fortman, Bagwell and
Owen Andress all scored two runs for the Tigers.
Sewanee starter
Jack Merril allowed four runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning, posting three walks and two hit batters as well.
Henry Collins pitched well in relief, giving up two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Drew Lenz tossed 6.2 innings to pick up the win for Edgewood, allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out five.
The Eagles (1-4) scored four runs in the bottom of the first, starting with a leadoff walk to Kyle Prindle, but he was thrown out trying to steal second. With two outs Jacob Carney was hit, Brevin Brisack walked and Daniel Bentivegn was hit, loading the bases. Dominic Lee then singled up the middle, scoring a pair of runs.
Colby Davis walked, loading the bases again, and Ryan Harris delivered a two-run single to center as well, ending the day for Merril.
The Tigers got a run back in the third when Andress and
Jonah Patton both singled, with Andress taking third on the play. Teel's sacrifice fly plated the run, but that was all for Sewanee.
Edgewood answered in the bottom of the inning after Bentivegn was hit again to leadoff and Harris singled with two outs, putting runners on the corners. Harris went to second on a wild pitch and Hayden Hellenbra plated both runners with a double to leftcenter.
Fortman singled and stole second to leadoff the fifth for Sewanee. He scored on a single to right by Teel.
In the sixth Bagwell singled and stole second and with two outs, Fortman tripled to right, plating a run and cutting the deficit to 6-3.
The Eagles got the runs right back in the bottom of the inning, though, after Prindle singled, Terry Tolliver Jr., was hit and Carney walked, loading the bases. With one out Bentivegn singled up the middle, plating two runs, but
Childers Winn induced an inning-ending doubleplay to minimize the damage.
In the eighth Bagwell led off with a double before Andress was hit and Patton walked, loading the bases. Fortman's double down the rightfield line plated two runs, but Patton was thrown out at the plate on the play. Teel followed with an RBI double to center, cutting the deficit to 8-6.
Tyler Pinson's single through the right side scored Teel, making it a one-run game.
Ethan Williams singled to leftcenter, putting runners on the corners, but
Blake Pou bounced into an inning-ending doubleplay with Sewanee still trailing, 8-7.
Edgewood got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Carney and Brisack both walked and Lee was hit with two outs. Carney scored on a passed ball before Davis grounded out to end the inning.
Will Jennewein singled to leadoff the ninth, but Tor entered and got a strikeout, a fly ball and a groundout to end the game.
Sewanee plays Grinnell College at 4 p.m. and Edgewood at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
