Blake Pou posted three hits and three runs,
Ethan Williams collected three hits and four RBIs and
Austin Graber tossed 2.2 innings of relief for the win in Sewanee's 6-4 victory over Brandeis University in baseball action Monday afternoon here at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers (4-0) scored twice in the first before the Judges tied the game with single runs in the fourth and sixth inning.
Will Jennewein singled in the bottom of the sixth and
Alden Wright followed with a single to right, with Jennewein scoring on an error.
Sewanee added two more runs in the seventh after a leadoff walk from
Jonah Patton and a single by Pou. Williams plated a run with a groundout and
Tyler Pinson's nubber off the end of the bat started foul, then rolled fair right along the first base line for the base hit, scoring Pou on the play.
In the eighth Pou walked, went to second on a wild pitch and came across on a Williams single to left, extending the lead to 6-2.
Brandeis plated a pair of runs in the ninth with two singles and a walk before
Joey Crews got the final three outs in relief of Graber. Crews induced a pair of groundouts and added a strikeout to end the contest for his first save.
Sewanee starter
Jack Merril retired the first nine batters with five groundouts (one was a doubleplay ball after a single) and three strikeouts before running into trouble in the fourth. Merril allowed one run on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts.
Holden Phillips tossed 2.1 innings of relief for the Tigers, giving up the tying run in the sixth, and Graber got the final out of that inning and worked two more scoreless frames before getting in trouble in the ninth. Graber gave up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts to get the win.
Brandeis starter Andrew Tringe allowed the first four baserunners of the game to reach before settling down and retiring 13 of the final 18 hitters he faced. He walked one and struck out six, scattering seven hits in five innings of work.
Reliever Kyle Murray allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits in two innings to take the loss.
Dylan Walsh collected two of the Judges' seven hits and Connor Crowley scored a pair of runs.
Patton collected two hits and scored twice for the Tigers, with the first three spots in the order accounting for seven of the team's 12 hits.
The Tigers started quickly with two runs in the first after a leadoff single from Patton. Pou chopped a single through the rightside, putting runners on the corners, and he took second on a wild pitch. Williams then singled sharply to center, plating both runners for an early lead for the home team.
The Judges got a run back in the fourth when Crowley drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a wild pitch before Ben Kuja was hit. Both runners moved up on another wild pitch and the third wild pitch of the inning allowed the run to score. Merril exited the game and Phillips induced an inning-ending doubleplay to keep the Tigers in the lead.
Crowley led off the top of the sixth with a double to leftcenter and Kuja followed with an RBI single to right, knotting the game at two. Henry Aronwald walked with out and Jake Freed also drew a free pass, but Graber struck out Keith Lee and Walsh lined out to end the threat for Brandeis.
Sewanee retook the lead in the bottom of the inning after a two-out infield single by pinch-hitter Jennewein. Wright then singled to right and the low liner got past Brandeis' Bobby Quill, with Jennewein scoring all the way from first on the play for a 3-2 edge.
In the seventh Patton walked and Pou singled and stole second before a groundout to first by Williams plated a run. Pinson's q-shot down the first base line scored another and Sewanee led 5-3 headed to the eighth.
In the ninth Keith Lee led off with a single to left and Walsh singled through the right side.
Will Berry uncorked a pair of wild pitches, scoring a run, and pinch-hitter Danny Tambascia also drew a free pass, forcing Crews into the game.
Quill grounded into a fielder's choice, plating a run, before Crowley struck out and Kuja grounded out to end the game.
