Simons leads golfers at O'Briant Jensen Memorial

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Senior Cameron Simons carded a three-over 75 and sophomore Turner Chiles shot 76 for Sewanee men's golf on a cold and blustery Monday at the O'Briant Jensen Memorial at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro, N.C.
 
Simons, playing as an individual, posted six pars with two bogeys and one double bogey on the front nine. The San Antonio, Texas, native birdied holes 10 and 11 before a double at No. 12. He finished with four pars, a birdie on 16 and a bogey at the last hole for three-over 75, tied for 11th. North Carolina Wesleyan's Juan Amil leads by one shot after shooting 71, with two other players tied for even-par.
 
Chiles, like many of his teammates, got off to a slow start with five bogeys in the first eight holes. The Houston, Texas, native birdied Nos. 10 and 11 and collected five pars but also two bogeys on the remaining seven holes for a four-over 76, tied for 21st.
 
Senior Elias Becker was the only Sewanee player who performed well on the front nine, recording six pars with one double bogey and birdies on holes six and nine. The Mexico City, Mexico native also birdied No. 10 but then struggled on the remainder of the back nine, collecting five bogeys and one double for a five-over 77, tied for 30th.
 
Freshman Aidan Tudor netted five bogeys and four pars on the front nine. The New Market, Md., native posted seven pars and two bogeys on the back, finishing at six-over 78, tied for 42nd.
 
Senior Colin Edwards and sophomore Niel Phillips both shot 83 in the first round.
 
Edwards registered five bogeys and a double on the front nine. The Brookhaven, Ga., native added five more bogeys on the back and is tied for 84th.
 
Phillips started the day with a double bogey but then made four pars before three bogeys and an eight on the par-3 eighth hole. The New Orleans, La., native played the back nine in two-over with seven pars and two bogeys.
