Fletcher Bigham,
Russ Marr and
Reid Carrier all netted 14 points and
Luka Avaliani added 11 and Sewanee posted the first 12 points of the second half, running away for an 84-64 victory over Greensboro College in men's basketball action Thursday in Greensboro, N.C.
The Tigers (7-5) put together a 10-2 spurt in the first half and then registered a 12-0 run to start the second period. Sewanee made 11-of-36 from 3-point range in the contest, including six in the second half.
A pair of layups by
Graham Smith put the Tigers in front, 11-8, five minutes into the contest and Carrier's 3-pointer kept Sewanee in the lead, 16-14.
Ben Folk followed with a triple, starting a 10-2 run by the Tigers, with Carrier converting an old-fashioned 3-point play along with a dunk by Smith and a layup from Bigham.
Aidan Eller's 3-pointer ended the spurt but
Tre Corrigan answered with a three for Sewanee for a 29-21 advantage with six minutes remaining in the period. Corrigan added another triple and Bigham's layup in the final seconds gave the Tigers a 38-25 lead at intermission.
Sewanee made only 5-of-18 from behind the arc but netted 10 points off seven Greensboro turnovers and the Tigers committed only two miscues in the opening 20 minutes.
Sewanee posted the first 12 points of the second half, including a 3-pointer by Bigham, an old-fashioned 3-point play and a layup from Avaliani and two field goals by Marr, extending the advantage to 50-25.
Carrier's 3-pointer was the only points for the Tigers over the next five minutes. DJ Jackson made a triple for the Pride and followed that with two layups and a jumper, a personal 9-0 run, before Carrier connected on another three for Sewanee for a 56-37 lead.
Jimmy Mitchell made a pair of 3-pointers in the last five minutes in the victory. Smith finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Isaiah Pruett led the Pride with 16 points and nine boards while Jackson netted 14 and Grant Thompson collected 11.
The Tigers return home Tuesday, taking on Piedmont University at 6 p.m. at Juhan Gymnasium.
