Ashlyn Richards scored on a penalty kick early in the second half and assisted on a goal by
Samantha Ferry on a corner kick late in the period in Sewanee's 2-0 victory over Berry College in women's soccer action here Saturday at Puett Field.
The Tigers (5-1-3, 1-0-0 SAA) were unable to find the back of the net in the first half but
Olivia Fee was fouled inside the box just over two minutes into the second period, drawing a penalty kick. Richards buried the PK down the center just 2:22 into the half for a 1-0 Sewanee edge.
Berry goalkeeper Maggie Jones stymied the Tigers for much of the second half, with Sewanee peppering the net for 19 shots in the final 45 minutes, but the graduate student recorded nine saves, knocking away shots by
Kylene Monaghan,
Olivia Fee and
Brianna Fee along the way.
The Tigers also netted nine corner kicks in the second half and finally made one of them pay off in the 85
th minute, with Ferry heading in Richards' delivery on the doorstep for the final goal.
Jones finished the match with 12 saves overall against 28 total shots by the Tigers. The Vikings (1-5-3, 0-1-0) managed only five shots in the match, forcing a pair of saves by Sewanee's
Leah Atkins.
The Tigers controlled possession for much of the first half, but the majority of that was in the middle third of the field, creating nine shots but only three attempts on goal. Shots from distance by
Olivia Fee (blocked) and
Lacey Carder preceded the best attempt of the half.
Monaghan passed to the right for a shot by
Susie Whitsett, but a diving save by Jones kept the match scoreless heading to intermission. Atkins made one save, a shot from the right by Margaret Eddins.
Sewanee travels to 10
th-ranked Emory University on Tuesday and continues conference play next weekend at Oglethorpe University.
