Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Susie Whitsett and
Rhia Tkac each posted goals in the second half, both on headers, and Sewanee registered a 3-0 victory against Piedmont University in women's soccer action Monday at Puett Field.
The Tigers (4-1-3) led just 1-0 in the 75
th minute after a
Kate Thomson score in the first period. That changed on a corner kick by
Ashlyn Richards to Whitsett at the top of the six-yard box, with the freshman heading it past Piedmont goalkeeper Maggie Leger, who played the final 53 minutes because of an injury to starter Haylee Dornan.
Just over nine minutes later Lacey Corder dropped a ball down the line to Sonia Dhurasovic, who crossed to the middle of the box and the head of Tkac, who also found the back of the net in the 85
th minute, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Tigers controlled the run of play for almost the entire first half, creating numerous chances and crosses against the Lions, who cut off passing lanes and knocked away passes down the lines. Dornan cleared away a pair of corner kicks and a deflection by
Brianna Fee was cleared off the line by a Lions defender.
Piedmont (2-2-3) blocked a host of chances as well, including a pair of Fee and one each by
Kylene Monaghan and
Samantha Ferry. Thomson's shot from 45 yards nearly bounced into the goal and about two minutes later, her drive from near the left sideline almost bounced over the head of Dornan, who caught the ball but fell into the goal for the first score for Sewanee in the 38
th minute.
The Tigers outshot Piedmont, 16-0, in the first half, with five of those shots on goal, but many came from near the top of the box or outside. Monaghan's shot in the 25
th minute hit the crossbar and Dornan saved the rebound on a shot from
Olivia Fee.
Dornan finished with three saves and Leger collected six while Sewanee posted 33 total shots in the match to three for the Lions.
Sewanee begins conference action this weekend, hosting Berry College at 4 p.m. at Puett Field.
