Dyer Barnes caught two touchdown passes and the Sewanee defense surrendered only 51 yards of total offense, posting eight sacks in a 42-0 victory over Westminster College in football action Saturday here at McGee Field-Harris Field.
Barnes registered scoring plays of 53 and 23 yards while
Jacorin Thomas added two rushing touchdowns and
Jack Satterfield booted two field goals for the Tigers (1-1). The offense amassed 419 yards of total offense, including 127 on the ground and 137 in the air from Thomas.
Westminster recorded negative 42 yards rushing thanks to the eight sacks, including 2.5 by
Kason Holder and 1.5 apiece from
Micah Millraney and
Connor Maness. The unit held the Blue Jays on four plays inside the 10-yard line early in the first quarter after a bad snap on a punt and posted a 3-and-out after an interception later in the period.
Sewanee missed chances for touchdowns three times in the second quarter, with Satterfield kicking two field goals and the offensive unit turning the ball over on downs inside the Westminster 10 just before the half. The Tigers took advantage of short fields in the second half, collecting three touchdowns on drives of 52, 48 and 17 yards.
Westminster quarterback Keegan Zydbel completed 8-of-18 passes for 80 yards.
The Tiger defense stiffened after a high snap on a punt went off the hands of Satterfield, who was unable to pick it up and the ball rolled out of bounds at the Sewanee five-yard line. Zdybel's pass was incomplete on first down and he was tackled for loss on second down. Zdybel scrambled past the line of scrimmage before throwing into the endzone on third down, pushing the ball back again. Liam Corley hooked a 31-yard field goal and the game remained scoreless.
The defense also got a 3-and-out after Westminster's Daronne Wright picked off Thomas at the Blue Jays' 31-yard line and a short punt gave the Tigers the ball near midfield.
Pass interference on an attempt downfield to Barnes gave Sewanee a first down and
Dawson White scampered 34 yards down the left side, breaking tackles along the way. Westminster stopped three tries inside the four-yard line but Thomas got just enough on fourth down for a touchdown and a 7-0 Tigers edge late in the opening period.
Sewanee added to the lead early in the second quarter on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Thomas to Barnes, getting behind the defense down the middle of the field for the score.
The Tigers took advantage of another short punt by the Blue Jays and Thomas rushed up the middle for 22 yards on second down. White fumbled but recovered just inside the 10 and Thomas was tackled for no gain, setting up a 26-yard field goal by Satterfield for a 17-0 advantage.
Thomas scrambled for 29 yards on the ensuing drive and
AJ McLemore caught a 19-yard pass. An errant snap and fumble stalled the drive, but Satterfield booted a 29-yard field goal, extending the lead to 20-0.
The Tigers had another chance late in the half inside the Blue Jays 10-yard line after a turnover on downs at the Westminster 33.
Cooper Alford caught a 23-yard pass down the middle but the Blue Jays got two tackles for loss, holding on fourth down.
Thomas gained 28 and 18 yards on consecutive runs in the third quarter but came out of the game with an injury. Three plays later
Jayden Bragg hit Alford for a three-yard touchdown and a 27-0 advantage.
Alford caught a 14-yard pass on the next Sewanee possession and a roughing the passing penalty pushed the ball to the Blue Jays' 15, with Thomas rushing 15 yards up the middle for the TD.
Westminster had a bad snap on the punt late in the third period, setting up the Tigers at the 17. Barnes caught a 23-yard TD pass three plays later (after a penalty) for the final tally of the game.
Sewanee travels to Guilford College next Saturday and returns home in two weeks, taking on Millsaps College at Noon.
