Sewanee football welcomes new coaching talent for 2024 Season

SEWANEE – As the football players report for the 2024 campaign, second-year head coach Andy McCollum is excited to welcome four new faces to his coaching staff. These additions bring a wealth of experience from both college and the NFL, adding even more depth and knowledge to the program.

McCollum, now in his 44th season as a coach, helped the Tigers hit several key milestones in his first year, including a 3-1 start to the season—the best since 2001. Under his leadership, Sewanee also won its first conference road game in five years, ended a 23-game conference losing streak, and defeated Millsaps for the first time in 18 years.

McCollum proudly welcomes Dewayne Alexander, Richard Shelton, Thomas Hearn, and Mike McGhee to this year's staff—coaches with diverse backgrounds who share a deep understanding of the game. "I'm incredibly proud of the staff we've built at Sewanee," McCollum says. "They bring energy, enthusiasm, and a perfect mix of youth and experience. These men aren't just coaches; they're people of character, making a lasting impact on our student-athletes. That's our goal—developing men of character."

Dewayne Alexander, with a 36-year coaching career that includes stops at Tennessee Tech, Cumberland University, and high schools throughout Tennessee, adds invaluable leadership to the Tigers. Alexander, a Tennessee native, boasts a history of turning programs around, including a successful stint as head coach at Cumberland and a 6-6 season at Tennessee Tech that marked one of the best turnarounds in FCS football.

Richard Shelton, a former NFL cornerback drafted by the Denver Broncos in 1989, brings an elite pedigree to Sewanee. With five seasons in the NFL, four with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Shelton now leverages his experience in coaching and scouting. After 16 years as an NFL scout for the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans, Shelton joins the Tigers to help mold the next generation of student-athletes, bringing a unique perspective in developing wide receivers both on and off the field.

Thomas Hearn joins the team after stints at Georgia Southern and Bakersfield College, where he honed his skills in the Air Raid offense and the run game. His connection with student-athletes and his detailed knowledge of the game are already paying dividends at Sewanee. Meanwhile, former Sewanee running back Mike McGhee returns to the program after a standout career, where he overcame injuries to earn All-SAA honors. McGhee is now a full-time coach, admired for his character and dedication, adding depth to the coaching staff.

Returning coaches Drew Gaither and Graham Hobbs remain integral to McCollum's staff, serving as Associate Head Football Coach and Assistant Football Coach/Offensive Coordinator, respectively. "Coach Gaither, stepping into the role of defensive coordinator, brings unmatched energy and positivity," says McCollum. "Graham Hobbs continues to inspire with his knowledge and enthusiasm after doing an outstanding job with young players last season."

McCollum is also excited about the addition of Gordon Hight as the team's football operations lead. "Gordon has quickly made a big impact on and off the field," McCollum notes.

"Recruiting is our lifeblood at Division III," McCollum explains. "We seek student-athletes who will succeed in the classroom, on the field, and in life. I couldn't be prouder of the people we've assembled. The foundation we're building for our student-athletes is rooted in care, love, and high expectations."

As McCollum and his staff look forward to the upcoming season, the addition of new coaching talent combined with returning leaders promises continued growth and success for the Sewanee Tigers.
