SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee scored four runs in the first inning, including a two-run single from
Wilson Irvin, but rain suspended Saturday's first game of a doubleheader with the Tigers leading, 4-3, in the bottom of the third here at Montgomery Field.
Sewanee starter
Henry Shields got out of a first-inning jam after walking the leadoff hitter and giving up a single to center by Chathan Clouatre, but the lefthander struck out the side to end the inning.
Sewanee started quickly offensively against Toccoa righthander Josh Henshaw, with a one-out single by
Blake Pou and
Hunter Herndon followed with a single.
Will Yarbro's single to right plated a run and he stole second.
Irvin's sharp single off the glove of the third baseman scored two runs and he reached second after the Screaming Eagles botched a pickoff attempt. JT Carter's two-out chopper up the middle pushed across another run for an early 4-0 Tigers lead.
Toccoa Falls got three of the runs back in the second, though, taking advantage of an error by Sewanee.
Peyton Powell beat out an infield single to leadoff and Owin Gunyon walked before a sacrifice bunt by Cole Smith. The throw from Shields went off the glove of the second baseman, Carter, and Powell came around to score on the play.
Gunyon came across on a balk and after another sac bunt, Noah Davis' sacrifice fly to deep leftfield plated another run, cutting the Sewanee lead to 4-3.
The game was delayed with no outs in the bottom of the third inning because of heavy, intermittent rain.
Sewanee is back at home next weekend for a three-game series against Anderson University, with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and a single game Sunday, also at 11 a.m.
