Luka Avaliani netted 13 points to lead four Sewanee players in double figures, but Berry College made 15 3-pointers, running out to a big first-half lead and never looking back in a 102-63 victory over Sewanee in men's basketball action here Sunday at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (5-11, 1-4) Tigers got off to a rough start offensively, committing seven turnovers in the first seven minutes of action, with Berry converting those miscues into 14 points, including 3-pointers by Braxton Benham and Parker Godwin, giving the Vikings an 18-7 advantage.
Reid Carrier answered the Godwin triple with a three for Sewanee, but Berry (7-9, 4-1) reeled off eight consecutive points, including a short jumper by Drew Winegarden and then a 3-pointer plus the foul and free throws, also for Winegarden.
The Vikings continued to stay hot from behind the arc, with 3-pointers for Blake Campbell and Isaac Martin, stretching the Vikings lead to 36-14 with just under six minutes left in the half. Campbell and Jordan Krueger added triples for Berry later in the period, but
Cody Baerlocher made a three and then Avaliani completed an old-fashioned 3-point play for the Tigers.
Avaliani and Baerlocher each netted two field goals apiece in the final two minutes for the Tigers, but Winegarden connected on two more 3-pointers for Berry, the last one with just under 10 seconds left in the half, and the Vikings took a 58-31 advantage to intermission.
Sewanee started the second half quickly with a 9-3 spurt that forced a timeout by the Vikings, with 3-pointers by
Rashaun Williams and
Tre Corrigan and a short jumper from Avaliani. Berry answered with seven consecutive points, continuing the offensive onslaught, with a 3-pointer by Krueger and a layup from Campbell.
The Tigers came with a 9-2 run with two baskets by Baerlocher and a triple from
Graham Smith. A turnover by the Vikings gave Sewanee a chance to cut into the deficit further, but Carrier mishandled a pass and the turnover was converted into a dunk by Berry's Benham.
Benham, Winegarden and Campbell made 3-pointers on consecutive trips to the Vikings midway through the half, putting the game out of reach.
Carrier and Baerlocher each finished with 11 points and
Russ Marr added 10. Campbell led all scorers with 25 points while Winegarden collected 21.
Sewanee finishes a four-game homestand next weekend, hosting Rhodes at 8 p.m. on Friday and Hendrix at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
