Softball Unveils 2023 Schedule

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South softball team has released the 2023 schedule, announced by head coach Merritt Yackey. 40 games are on the schedule, with 13 coming at home from the Tiger Softball Field.

As tradition over the last few years, the Tigers will be on the road for the first month of the season. Sewanee will open the 2023 season with a doubleheader at LaGrange (Ga.) on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Panthers return to the schedule for the first time since 2006.

The next day, Sewanee will take on Huntingdon (Ala.) in a doubleheader from Montgomery, Alabama. This will be the first time the two teams will meet on the softball diamond.

Over the weekend of Feb. 10-11, the Tigers will participate in the MUW Invitational, hosted by the Mississippi University for Women in Columbus. Covenant (Ga.) will also play in the weekend series.

The opening road swing continues, as the Purple and White return to the State of Georgia for back-to-back doubleheaders at Agnes Scott College and Wesleyan College on Feb. 18 and 19.

Sewanee will begin Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play on Feb. 25-26 with a three-game series at Birmingham-Southern.

The Tigers' home opener will occur on March 2, as a former conference foe makes the trek to the Domain. Rose-Hulman (Ind.), who was a part of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) from 2000-06, returns to the schedule for the first time since April 2006.

March 4-5 sees the Tigers back in SAA play with defending tournament champion Berry from Rome, Ga.

Sewanee will start spring break the following weekend at home with a conference series with Hendrix College on March 11-12.

Following Sunday's game at home, Sewanee will hit the road to Kissimmee, Florida for THE Spring Games over spring break. Over the break, the University of the South will play the University of New England (Maine), Wheaton College (Mass.), Loras College (Iowa), Hamline University (Minn.), Simpson College (Iowa) and Bethel University (Minn.) from March 14-17.

Five of the six opponents are first-time opponents for softball. Simpson will face Sewanee for the second time in program history, the first meeting coming in 2005.

After about a week off, the Tigers return to the road for a three-game series at Millsaps on March 25-26.

The month of April will see Sewanee at home for the final 11 games of the regular season schedule. It starts on April 1-2 when Centre comes to town.

Easter weekend will see Rhodes College coming to the Domain on April 7-8.

The regular season finale will be a doubleheader with MUW on April 16.

The 2023 SAA Tournament will take place over two weekends. The top-two teams in the league will host the pod rounds on April 21-23. The SAA Championship Series, a best-of-three, will take place April 29-30 at the highest remaining seed.

Merritt Yackey enters his eighth season as head coach of the University of the South softball program.
