SEWANEE, Tenn. – Maggie Barker recorded four hits and drove in two runs across the doubleheader, but Berry used early scoring bursts in both games to sweep Sewanee, 7-2 and 7-2, in Southern Athletic Association softball action on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE
Barker went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, but a four-run third inning propelled Berry to a 7-2 victory in the opener.
Sewanee threatened early, putting runners on in both the first and third innings, but was unable to capitalize. Berry broke through in the bottom of the third, using five hits and a Sewanee error to score four runs and take control of the game.
The Vikings added another run in the fourth on an RBI single before extending the lead in the fifth. Berry used three hits and a sacrifice fly to plate two more runs, pushing the advantage to 7-0.
Sewanee responded in the top of the fifth, as KK Wadkins and Abbie Buckner recorded back-to-back singles and Grace Black advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Barker followed with a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-2.
The Tigers added a baserunner in the sixth on a single from Madilyn Parker, but were unable to generate further offense down the stretch.
Barker led Sewanee with three hits, while Buckner, Black, Parker, and Wadkins each added a hit.
Reagan Huskey (7-13) took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits in four innings. Buckner tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
GAME TWO
Tatum Parman delivered Sewanee's lone extra-base hit with a solo home run, but Berry again used early offense to secure a 7-2 win in the second game.
Berry struck first in the second inning with a two-run home run and added another run later in the frame to take a 3-0 lead. The Vikings extended their advantage in the third, capitalizing on a pair of hits and walks to score two more runs.
Sewanee broke through in the fifth as Parman launched a solo home run to left field to put the Tigers on the board.
Berry answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on three hits to extend the lead to 7-1.
In the seventh, Abby Winkler reached on a walk and advanced into scoring position before Parman reached on an error. Abbie Buckner then delivered an RBI single to bring home Winkler for the final run of the game.
Sydney Tackett led Sewanee with two hits, while Buckner added an RBI. Barker also recorded a hit in the contest.
Ansley Giffin (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs in 2.1 innings. Winkler provided 3.2 innings of relief, giving up two runs on four hits.
The Tigers play the final game of the season against Berry on Saturday at Noon ET, 11 a.m. CT.
