Class of 2021 of Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame Released

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South announced the second of three Hall of Fame Classes for 2020, 2021 and 2022 after a two-year hiatus. 

As announced in a letter to the alumni on Friday, June 24, the 2020 and 2021 classes will be inducted in September 2023 along with the Class of 2023. More information on logistics will be announced at a later date. 

On Wednesday, the Department of Athletics released the 2021 class: Charlie Boyd C'09, Chalankis Brown C'11 and Dervla Delaney C'00. 

Charlie Boyd C'09, Men's Tennis
Charlie Boyd was a member of the men's tennis program for four seasons and was a three-time All-SCAC selection. The SCAC also chose him to the league's 30th Anniversary team, announced in 2021. 

During his sophomore year in 2007, along with his All-Conference selection, he was also invited to participate in the NCAA Singles Championships in St. Louis. Boyd captured All-America status with his 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 win of Ted Haley of Williams (Mass.) in the Round of 32. Boyd garnered Sewanee's first All-America award since 2003.

At the end of the season, Boyd was ranked 23rd nationally in Singles. 

The next year, he was named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team at the No. 1 flight, and he finished runner-up in the All-SCAC voting. 

Boyd also was an All-Tournament selection at the No. 1 flight during his senior year in 2009, and was ranked fourth on the final All-SCAC Team. 

A two-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete, he was a member of the SCAC Academic Honor Roll three times. 

Chalankis Brown C'11, Football/Men's Track & Field
A two-sport athlete competing on the football field and track, Brown was a defensive back and sprinter for Sewanee during his tenure on the Domain. 

On the gridiron, Brown was a four-time All-SCAC member, including earning two First Team nods in 2008 and 2009. He became the program's ninth player to achieve All-Conference in each season he played for the Tigers. 

Additionally, he was was named to the SCAC's 30th Anniversary Football Team in 2021. 

On Sept. 20, 2008 vs. Colorado College, Brown caught four interceptions as the Tigers picked off the CC quarterback seven times, matching the SCAC record for the most in the game. For Brown, the four picks is tied for the second-most in a game in league history. 

The next week at DePauw, Brown used a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown, good for the third-longest return in program history. 

That season, Brown led the SCAC with seven interceptions and was named as a First Team All-SCAC defensive back as a sophomore. Additionally, he captured All-Region laurels on the Third Team. 

For his career on the football field, Brown captured 178 tackles, 11 interceptions, 27 passes defended, nine tackles for a loss and six blocked kicks. 

On the track, Brown particpated in the 100 and 200 meters and was a nine-time All-SCAC honor, including three gold medals. He was a part of the league's 30th Anniversary Team for Track & Field in 2021. 

At the 2009 SCAC Championships, Brown broke the 100-meter championship record with a 10.75-second sprint to win the event that season. The mark is the sixth-fastest at the time of his induction. He also claimed the gold the following year in the event. 

Below are his championship times in the 100 meters: 
  • 2008 - 11.15 seconds (second)
  • 2009 - 10.75 seconds (champion)
  • 2010 - 10.98 seconds (champion)
  • 2011 - 11.18 seconds (third)
In the 200 meters, Brown was a three-time All-SCAC member and captured the top spot at the 2009 Championship. 

Below are his championship times in the 200 meters: 
  • 2008 - 22.85 seconds (second)
  • 2009 - 22.28 seconds (champion)
  • 2010 - 22.58 seconds (second)
Additionally, he was a part of two All-Conference selections in the 4x100 relay. In 2009, the team clocked a 42.65-second performance and in 2011, it was a 43.14-second finish. Both times were good for third place at the championships. 

At the time of his induction, Brown currently holds one indoor record, two individual outdoor records and one outdoor relay record. 

The University named Brown to the Barron-Cravens Cup, the senior male athlete of the year, the the Michaux Nash winner for track and field. 

Dervla Delaney C'00, Field Hockey
Delaney was a four-year letterwinner with the field hockey team as she was listed a two-time Regional All-America recipient in both her junior and senior seasons. 

Her junior campaign in 1998 saw Delaney tally 32 points on 10 goals and 12 assists. The 1998 squad were named champions of the Kentucky-Indiana-Tennessee (KIT) Conference. 

During her senior season, she netted the game-winner in overtime against DePauw as she finished with 27 points thanks to nine goals and assists each. Along with her Regional All-America selection that year, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) garnered her with a spot on the Second Team on the national All-America listing for Division III. 

Delaney wrapped up her career with the Purple and White scoring 74 points on 30 assists and 22 goals.
