Austin promoted to Deputy Director of Athletics

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee Director of Athletics John Shackelford has announced the promotion of Carrie Austin to Deputy Director of Athletics, elevating Austin from her current role as Associate Director of Athletics.

Austin enters her fifth season with the Sewanee Athletics Department in 2026-27 and has played a key role in the department's internal operations since arriving to the Mountain.

"Carrie Austin has been a vital member of our athletic staff for more than four years," said Sheckelford. "She's a terrific leader with a tremendous skill set for running day-to-day operations of our growing department. We're excited to see her in the well-deserved new role."

As Deputy Director of Athletics, Austin will serve as a senior member of the Athletic Leadership Team, with expanded responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the department, strategic initiatives, compliance, purchasing, and budget management. She will also provide leadership in departmental policy and planning, personnel management, championship event hosting, and the operational success of varsity support programs, with particular oversight of football and equestrian.

In addition, Austin will assume full responsibility for the athletics department when the Director of Athletics is unavailable and will work closely with campus partners across the University to support student-athlete success and the overall mission and strategic goals of Sewanee Athletics. The role also includes oversight of departmental efforts related to gender equity, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and Title IX compliance initiatives.

"I am incredibly appreciative of Coach Shack and Provost Scott Wilson for their trust and confidence in me as I step into this new role," said Austin. Sewanee has become the best home imaginable for my family and me, thanks to the extraordinary community and unwavering support that surrounds us. I am honored to continue serving our student-athletes and coaches, and I look forward to building on everything that we have accomplished together as we pursue excellence both on and off the field."
