SEWANEE, Tenn. - The University of the South announced the first of three Hall of Fame Classes for 2020, 2021 and 2022 after a two-year hiatus.
As announced in a letter to the alumni on Friday, the 2020 and 2021 classes will be inducted in September 2023 along with the Class of 2023. More information on logistics will be announced at a later date.
On Monday, the Department of Athletics released the 2020 class: Bob Swisher C'66, Jordan Casey C'09 and Matthew Martelli C'05.
Bob Swisher C'66, Men's Basketball
Bob Swisher was a four-year letterwinner and three-year captain of the men's basketball program that included a College Athletic Conference title in 1966. After defeating Washington and Lee and Washington-St. Louis to win the championship, Swisher was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Leading the team in scoring that season with 17.4 points per game, Swisher posted a field goal percentage of 50.4% in his senior campaign.
For his career, he dropped 1,193 points, good for 18th all-time in program history and second at the end of the 1960s.
Other highlights include averaging double-digit points per game in each season, and he led the team twice in the category. Additionally, during his junior campaign in 1964-65, the team defeated University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) twice in the same season. The Tigers defeated the Rebels on the Domain, 74-62 on Dec. 12, and five days later in Oxford, Sewanee edged out the road win, 46-44.
Jordan Casey C'09, Women's Tennis
Jordan Casey was a four-year member of the women's tennis team. During her career, the Tigers made three NCAA Championship appearances as a team, including Sewanee's third place finish in 2007. Sewanee also locked up the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship that season as well.
Casey was a part of the SCAC All-Tournament Team in 2007 at No. 6 singles, and the league highlighted her win as a part of the SCAC's top-20 moments to celebrate 20 years of the league's existence in 2011. Dropping the first set, 4-6, to Kristine Lewry of then No. 1 DePauw, Casey rallied to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3 to win the team's first SCAC Championship since 1997.
A two-time All-SCAC selection, Casey finished 58-20 in singles, and with her win percentage at 74%, she is 13th all-time in the category. At the end of her career, she was ranked 49th nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Additionally, her winning percentage of .928 her freshman year (13-1) is the best in program history.
In the classroom, Jordan was the college's 27th recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was named Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
