ATLANTA - After securing the Southern Athletic Association's second 50-point game in the 10-plus history of the league, the SAA office selected
Russ Marr as the Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Additionally, D3hoops.com named Marr to the Team of the Week from Nov. 28-Dec. 4.
The sophomore had a week to remember in his two games last week that saw Sewanee win both of its games on the road. Totaling 70 points in two games, Marr posted a 25-of-37 mark from the field (67.6%). Adding nine rebounds, he also had five blocks.
Against Covenant on Tuesday, he became the second SAA player in history to score 50 points in a game with a 50-point performance on 17-of-22 shooting (77.3%) and 12-of-17 from the charity stripe. Only scoring 12 points at the half, Marr dropped 38 in the second half and overtime. With 15 of those points coming in the extra period, he scored the first 13 points for the Tigers.
In Sewanee's SAA opener with Centre, the Bryant, Ala. native posted his fourth straight game of at least 20 points, dropping 20 on the Colonels thanks to 8-of-15 shooting with three blocks.
In the national rankings, after games played on Dec. 4, Marr is second in the country in points scored (242) and field goals (83), third in made 3-pointers (36) and 19th in free throws (40).
The University of the South, who is riding a six-game winning streak, returns to the hardwood on Dec. 29 for the Jack Berkshire Classic, hosted by Oglethorpe University. The Tigers will tangle with the Panthers of LaGrange (Ga.) for a second time this season in the first game of the tournament in Atlanta.
