McNulty's Homer Not Enough as Petrels Rally Past Baseball in Rubber Match

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee baseball team saw a 3-1 lead erased in the middle innings, as the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University defeated the Tigers, 5-3, Sunday afternoon at Montgomery Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Each team tacked a run in the first inning. The visitors recorded the first run of the game on a base knock to the outfield.

-In the bottom half of the frame, Trey Akins recorded an RBI groundout to score Riley Brandvold, who roped a double into the outfield.

-In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Purple and Gold went to work on offense. After a leadoff walk by Carter Huffman, Chris McNulty drilled a ball over the left field fence to give Sewanee the 3-1 advantage.

-The fifth and sixth innings would be a factor for the Sewanee defense, as the visitors made it a 3-2 contest after four and a half innings. In the sixth, the Petrels scored three times to take the lead for good.

-The Tigers had an opportunity in the bottom of the ninth. With the winning run at the plate, Garrett Liebe nearly missed one with a deep fly ball to the outfield.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Chris McNulty led the Tigers with a multi-hit game, with one of his hits a two-run bomb.

-Riley Brandvold and Wesley Christian each added a double.

-Trey Holland (2-1) allowed four earned runs in 5.2 innings.

OGLETHORPE KEY STATISTICS
-Austin Jackson posted a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a double and two RBI at the leadoff spot.

-Sebastian Lopez added two hits for the Petrels.

-Drew Snow (1-0) tossed seven innings, allowing five hits and two walks.

UP NEXT
With the seven-game homestand in the books, Sewanee will now place its next six games away from the Domain. The trip begins Wednesday as the Tigers step out of conference play with a two-game series with Hanover.
