Caffrey Scores Game Winner to Push Win Streak to Six for Field Hockey

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Thanks to two goals by the nation's third-best scorer, plus a nearly hour and a half lightning delay, the Sewanee field hockey team extended its win streak to six games with a 2-1 overtime win over Bridgewater Sunday afternoon from Puett Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Despite taking 11 shots in the first 35 minutes, Bridgewater was only able to notch one goal, which came 1:48 into the contest. Dani Eddo caught the ricochet off of Kadie Hicks in goal to strike first.

-The Tigers struggled to get shots off the entire contest, but with 10 and a half minutes to go in regulation, Ceara Caffrey found a pass from Alex Hornsby off a penalty corner to score her 14th goal of the year to even the contest up at a goal each.

-Two minutes later, the teams were forced to evacuate due to lightning in the area. The teams were delayed for almost an hour and a half.

-Following the delay, Bridgewater took six shots in the final eight minutes and limited Sewanee to one shot, but the game was headed into overtime.

-In the overtime period, each team took three shots, and it was the charm for the Purple and Gold. With 1:34 left in the period, Caffrey found the back of the cage for the game-winner.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Sewanee took just nine shots in the contest, with Ceara Caffrey taking five of them with two goals.

-Rachel Blum (2-0) earned the win with seven shots in the second half and overtime and did not allow a goal.

BRIDGEWATER KEY STATISTICS
-Tessa Tierson recorded eight shots and Courtney Cooke with six for the Eagles.

-Danie Eddo scored once on three attempts.

-Ali Bishop (1-2) took the loss, saving three shots in nearly 44 minutes of play.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will look to wrap up the month of September with a visit to DePauw, beginning Sunday, Sept. 30 at 12 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. CT.
