Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The Sewanee football team saw their comeback effort fall short on Saturday afternoon, as the Millsaps Majors had the upper hand at Harper Davis Field, 17-13.
With 4:57 remaining in the contest, the Tigers had the football looking to go 72 yards and score the touchdown since they were down four points. Starting at their own 28-yard line, Alex Darras got the first down on an Alan Puri 7-yard completion to the Tigers 42.
After two incompletions and a short gain, the Tigers were facing a fourth down situation. Needing nine yards for the first down, the freshman quarterback found C.J. McCullough for the 17-yard reception to put the Purple and Gold into Majors territory at the 30-yard line.
Three plays later, the Tigers were faced with another fourth down situation. At the Millsaps 35, Darras was flushed out of the pocket and took off running. He was able to get the first down, but as he went down to the turf at the 20, the ball came loose, and Millsaps' Hooch Jeansonne recovered the fumble with 1:19 remaining.
With only one timeout by Sewanee (2-2, 1-1), the Majors (2-2, 1-1) ran the clock out to secure the win.
The Tigers struck first on the scoreboard in the opening quarter when Warren Holland ran five yards for the six points with 8:30 to go.
Leading 7-0 with 5 minutes left in the opening stanza, the Majors' Hunter Sellen chipped in a 25-yard field goal, to make the score 7-3 in favor of the Tigers. That score would hold until the half.
The Majors opened the second half with Ty Proctor completing the pass for Evan Lundgren for 26 yards to give the Majors the 10-7 lead.
Sewanee would tie the contest at 10 later in the third quarter on a 37-yard Michael Jacobs field goal.
The big blow for the Purple and Gold came in the fourth quarter, as Proctor made the pass completion to Kain Mitchell for nine yards for the 17-10 lead.
The Tigers finished the contest leading the way in total offense with 354 yards to the Majors' 288.
Darras finished the game going 18-for-28 with 176 yards, and Holland led the way on the ground with 60 yards rushing on 21 carries with a touchdown.
Micah Maes led the Tigers receiving core with 56 reception yards on nine catches.
Pierce Johnson posted 12 tackles, while John Cleveland recorded one sack and one interception each.
The Tigers return to the mountain for Hall of Fame weekend next Saturday against Hendrix. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
