Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Sewanee men's soccer team needed overtime to decide Sunday's match with Methodist University at the Monarch Soccerplex, as the Tigers downed the Monarchs, 1-0, on a game-winning header by Kyle Johnston.
Each team traded shots in the final five minutes of regulation, but the Tigers had the perfect opportunity to win the match at the end of regulation. Josh Szymczak attempted a shot with one second left in regulation, but it was saved by the Methodist (1-2-1) keeper, Jonathan Moore.
In the overtime period, after a shot attempt in the 92nd minute, the Tigers' (3-2) Zach Birkhead attempted two shots at the 92:53 and 93:00 marks of the extra period.
The second shot attempt forced a corner kick by Alpo Sipilä. Off the corner, Johnston had enough room for a header right in front of the keeper that landed in the bottom left of the goal for the victory at the 93:21 mark.
This is the third game-winning goal for Johnston in 39 career matches with the Purple and Gold.
Will Merriman (3-2) saved three shots, with one of those three saves coming in the 92nd minute off a header attempt by Methodist's Lawson Lamm.
The Tigers return home to open the home slate of the schedule with Emory. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday night from Puett Field.
