Tigers stay alive with their first SAA Tournament win since 2012

Box Score

Story by student-athlete Ryan Tillman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 29, 2017) - After allowing 17 runs on Friday, the Sewanee baseball team responded on Saturday as the Tigers crushed rival Centre, 13-3, in the loser's bracket of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament.

Sewanee posted 13 runs off of 15 hits which gave the purple and gold their first win in a conference tournament game since 2012.

Sewanee incorporated a trio of arms in Lucas DeSantis, Preston Cronk, and Daniel McDonnell. All three Tigers displayed strong outings to help guide their team to the win. The staff limited Centre to five hits and three runs, while the defense surrendered no errors on the day. Despite walking a combined seven hitters, Tiger pitchers stranded 10 Colonel runners on base.

The middle of the lineup wore out virtually every arm Centre threw at the Sewanee. As a team, Sewanee scored three or more runs in three different innings.

Senior Jackson Cooper led the way with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, knocking in three runs while scoring one himself. The four, five, and six hitters in Trey Akins, Chris McNulty, and Tony Dykes followed suit to combine for a staggering 10 hits and five RBI.

All-SAA selection Akins punched a triple with the bases loaded in the first inning of the contest. That hit was a key in putting the Colonels behind early.

Sewanee returns to action with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Berry Saturday night.
