Story by student-athlete Ryan Tillman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 28, 2017) – A poor defensive game hampered the Sewanee baseball team Friday during the opening round of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament. Sewanee lost to rival Berry 17-2 on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College.

The Tigers will be placed in the losers' bracket and play the loser of Centre and Birmingham-Southern game, Saturday.

Four Tiger errors in the first inning led to the onslaught of Viking runs, as the number four seeded team took control of the lead in which they never relented.

Commanding an early 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the second, three consecutive singles capped by a double down the line off the bat of Devin Skelton plated two runs. Then, a groundout and another single scored two more runs, as Berry left the second inning with a 9-0 lead.

Sewanee only saw offensive success in the third and fourth innings. Catcher Ryan Poole singled through the left side, scoring Jack Bartlewski. Beau Allen then hit a sacrifice fly, plating Derek Hullings from third.

Ultimately, Sewanee's nine errors were no match for Berry's 17 hits.
