DiMento's goal in overtime leads Sewanee into the SAA Championship match

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (April 28, 2017) – Pat DiMento scored the first goal of the match, but it was his final goal of the contest in overtime that lifted the Sewanee men's lacrosse team into the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championship match on Sunday. Early in the extra period, DiMento ripped ia shot in, which led Sewanee to an 18-17 overtime win over Berry in the SAA semifinals.

In a game of runs, DiMento scored first with an early goal with less than two minutes off the clock in the first quarter. Berry answered back with a pair of goals. Down 2-1, Jimmy Parker ripped a shot home that tied the contest.

Berry scored four of the next five goals to close out the first. After two Viking scores, Thomas Lynde found the back of the net off a pass from Kip McGuire.

Sewanee rallied back with three straight goals. Peter Brown, DiMento, and Drew Crain all scored which tied the score at 6-6. Eventually, Berry led 11-9 at halftime. DiMento scored two more times in the second quarter while Will Pratt also fired home a goal.

Out of halftime, Sewanee scored twice. Sewanee tied the game at 11-11 after goals from Lynde and Parker. However, Berry answered with successful shots from Jason Wilhelm, Bailey Martin, Hudson Harris, and Nick Zakucia.

Down 15-11 heading into the fourth, Sewanee did not quit. A man-up goal from DiMento sparked a 5-0 Tiger run. Cameron Acuff scored twice during that stretch while Hayden Hunt and Brown also found the back of the net.

After Berry tied the contest with 3:31 left, Brown ripped in another goal with 2:29 left in regulation. Berry scored the equalizer with 1:18 to play when Quentin Johnson fired home a hard shot past Sewanee keeper Selby Austin.

That all set up the winner by DiMento in overtime. After Ryan Stubits and Joe Randazzo won the faceoff, Pratt found DiMento which led the winning shot.

Overall, both teams had a number of offensive chances. Sewanee led Berry in shots, 52-41. The Vikings did edge Sewanee in clears and groundballs while the combination of Stubits and Cason Liles led Sewanee to 21-of-38 faceoff wins.

DiMento led the offense with six goals on nine shots. Acuff, Brown, Parker, and Lynde also finished with multiple goals. On defense, Cal Pearce, Jake Rubenstein, and Stewart Roddey all finished with multiple caused turnovers.

Bailey Martin paced Berry with five goals, three groundballs, and two assists.

Sewanee advances to the SAA Championship match where they will play the winner of host Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern.
