Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse falls in SAA Championships, 13-11

DANVILLE, Ky. – Manoli Loupassi collected five points, and Charles Moran added four, but Sewanee fell to Rhodes in the SAA Championships in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon in Danville, Ky., 13-11.

Loupassi scored four goals and added an assist, while Moran tallied a goal with three assists. JM DuPree and Will Kennedy both added a goal and an assist to their day. Tyler Clary led Sewanee's defense with two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Gus Albright and Beau Burnette caused two turnovers and picked up a ground ball each. Hudson Jones caused a turnover and picked up three ground balls, while Hudson Gregory added two ground balls for the Tigers. Max Bensing was 10-of-17 from the X, adding three ground balls.

Sewanee came out of the gates strong, as Loupassi scored just 31 seconds into the game, giving the Tigers an early lead. The Tigers caused three turnovers, and Flynn Bowman collected a save in the opening seven minutes, controlling possession of the game early on. Hudson Jones caused another turnover and picked up the ground ball before DuPree fed Moran for a two-goal lead. Loupassi added another with 1:47 remaining, as Sewanee controlled the opening 13 minutes of play.

The Lynx, however, had an answer, winning the resulting faceoff and tacking on a goal, with just over a minute remaining in the half. Rhodes again took the faceoff, as Bowman made two back-to-back saves, before the Tigers got a defensive stop with six seconds in the period. However, a costly turnover gave Rhodes the ball, and they found Sewanee's defense out of position, and tacked on another goal as the horn went off for a 3-2 game.

The Lynx carried their momentum to open the second period, scoring five unanswered in the first nine minutes of the period, aided by two penalties from the Tigers and a man-down goal. Moran assisted Harrison Fuller with 4:13 on the clock to break up the Lynx's momentum, but Gavin Nagle scored again with 3:27 left to put Rhodes up by four going into halftime.

Sewanee answered after half, as Max Bensing won the opening faceoff and Clary picked up the ground ball before Westfall found the back of the cage, starting a four-goal run for the Tigers. Moran assisted Loupassi on the second before finding Kennedy for the third. The Tigers then stopped the Lynx on the next clear, and DuPree tied the game at 8-8 with 7:35 left in the third, forcing a Rhodes timeout. Bensing won the resulting faceoff and ground ball, but Jason Rubinstein picked up two huge saves to keep the Tigers from tacking on another.

Nagle scored again to give Rhodes back the lead with 2:07 to play, and the Lynx found another last-second goal, scoring with six seconds on the clock for a two-goal lead going into the final period.

Rhodes won the opening faceoff and picked up another fast goal to push their lead to three, but Bensing got the best of Ihsan Omer on the next faceoff, before Loupassi found Cookerly open. Hank Walsh got Sewanee back within one with 11:22 to play, and Rhodes was penalized with a two-minute penalty after a cross-check in the face. However, Sewanee was unable to convert and gave up another man-down goal, pushing Rhodes' lead back to two with four and a half minutes left in the Championships. Benton Sullivan collected the resulting faceoff, but Kennedy hit the post before Rubinstein picked up two more big saves, keeping the Tigers out of the cage. Rhodes answered on the next possession after hitting the crossbar themselves, and pushed their lead to three with 7:31 on the clock. Rubinstein collected three more big saves for Rhodes in the next five and a half minutes, before Kennedy finally found the back of the net with an assist from Loupassi. Sewanee's final changes were off target, as Rhodes secured a 13-11 win in the SAA Championships to collect their ticket to the NCAA Championships.

Rhodes was 2-of-3 on extra man opportunities, while the Tigers were 0-of-4.

Charles Moran, Manoli Loupassi, and Beau Burnette were named to the Men's Lacrosse All-Tournament team.
