Tigers suffer two close losses at No. 4 Birmingham-Southern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Story by student-athlete Ryan Tillman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 22, 2017) – Despite limiting No. 4 ranked Birmingham-Southern to a combined seven runs, the Sewanee baseball team could not overcome the Panthers top-level pitching in a pair of losses, Saturday.

Game One: Birmingham-Southern 4, Sewanee 2

Freshman Nick Ewing received the ball for his second start this season. The Tiger starter relinquished four runs and seven hits over four innings while walking just one. Ewing was matched by Panther hurler Ryan Gaines, who improved to 9-0 this season.

The BSC senior retired eight hitters while allowing just two runs. The Tiger relief effort was commanded by Andrew Naspinski and Lucas DeSantis. The two sophomores combined for four innings of scoreless ball.

Derek Hullings ignited Sewanee's solo run in the fifth inning, with a two-out single through the left side of the infield.

Jack Bartlewski's hot bat continued after he smashed a double to right center. A single by Ryan Poole, along with an errant throw from a Panther fielder, allowed both runners in scoring position to cross the plate.

Game Two: Birmingham-Southern 3, Sewanee 0

The Panthers were guided by another steady arm in Stephen Himic. The BSC starter captured his ninth win of the season.

The Birmingham, Ala., native struck out seven in seven scoreless innings.

Sewanee ace Drew Mancuso also performed well on the mound. Mancuso surrendered just three runs and seven hits over six innings.

Despite scattering seven hits, the Panther offense was only successful in the bottom of the third. A pair of singles from David Scott and Sam Roberts drove in all three runs.

Sewanee and BSC will conclude their series, Sunday.
