Tigers fall at Rhodes, 12-6

Box Score

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (April 14, 2017) – Despite firing 43 shots and winning all but three faceoffs, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-6 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) match at rival Rhodes, Friday.

The win gave the Lynx their first-ever SAA Regular Season Championship. Rhodes will now host the SAA Tournament later in April. In all previous seasons, Sewanee won the SAA Regular Season crown and hosted the postseason tournament. Friday was the first-ever men's lacrosse victory for Rhodes against the Tigers.

Down 1-0, Sewanee tied the match late in the first quarter when Tyler Calnan ripped in a goal. Rhodes answered back by scoring three goals over the next 16 minutes. That includes a goal just before time expired in the second quarter by Addison Mueller.

Down 4-1 heading into the third quarter, Sewanee answered back. Back-to-back goals from Calnan and Pat DiMento pulled the Tigers to within one, 4-3. Unfortunately, Rhodes responded in a major way. The Lynx opened a 4-0 run over the next eight minutes. Sewanee finally slowed the offensive spurt when Thomas Lynde scored two straight goals to end the third.

However, any chance of a Tiger comeback in the fourth quarter was short lived. Rhodes scored the first four goals which led to a six-goal Lynx advantage, 11-5, with 11:41 to play. Sewanee's final goal by Kip McGuire was answered when John Tooher scored for Rhodes with 4:45 remaining.

The two keys for Rhodes were the play of goalkeeper Cameron Link (11 saves) and Sewanee's 25 turnovers. Ryan Fennelly paced the Lynx offense with three goals and two assists.

Selby Austin, who is from West Tennessee, returned to his home region and made seven saves.

Cason Liles and Ryan Stubits played well for Sewanee. Liles won 12-of-14 faceoffs while Stubits finished 5-for-6.

Sewanee returns to action at Hendrix, Sunday.
