Tigers sweep Covenant for the first time in six seasons

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Story by student-athlete Ryan Tillman

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 11, 2017) – In a long-anticipated matchup between regional-rivals Covenant and the Sewanee baseball team, the Tigers swept a doubleheader against the Scots at historic Montgomery Field.

Two previous dates for Monday's doubleheader was postponed due to weather. The two seven-inning games saw strong performances from the Tigers. Sewanee won the opener 8-3 and took the nightcap, 10-6. The two victories marked the first sweep for Sewanee against Covenant in six seasons.

Game One: Sewanee 8, Covenant 3

Sewanee hitters Max Murray and Jackson Cooper ignited the offense with two doubles each. Those hits allowed the Tigers to post five runs in the first two innings. Right fielder Derek Hullings contributed with a double of his own and two more RBI.

Starter Harrison Lee bounced back to make his first start since visiting Berry. The Tiger pitcher tossed 4.1 innings of three-run ball. With the support of the offense, Lee captured his first win of the season. Relievers Danny McDonnell, Lucas DeSantis, and Jackson Cook shut down the Scots the final 2.2 innings.

Game two—Sewanee 10, Covenant 6

Pitcher Andrew Naspinski earned the start for the Tigers in game two. The sophomore threw an impressive 2.1 innings of no-hit baseball. Though the bullpen gave up six runs, Sewanee's offense stepped up again.

Singles from Murray, Cooper, and Trey Akins set up a three-RBI double by Jared Demkowicz. From there, poor execution from the Covenant pitching staff caused a burst of six runs to come across the plate for the Tigers in the fourth inning.

Overall, Sewanee finished with 14 hits in the second game. Cooper and Akins led the way with three hits each. Demkowicz finished with four RBI while Caleb Bloye led Covenant with a 3-for-4 performance.

Sewanee returns to action with a three-game series at Centre starting, Friday.
