After a slow start, Sewanee pulls away from Albion for a 13-9 win

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 8, 2017) – After a slow start, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team earned a 13-9 win over visiting Albion, Wednesday, at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.

The Tigers are now 3-2 overall and 2-1 at home.

After Albion opened the scoring, Sewanee answered back less than a minute later when Hayden Hunt ripped in an unassisted goal. The Tigers then took their first lead after Kip McGuire scored on a shot from 10 yards out.

However, Albion answered. The Britons scored four unanswered goals over the next six minutes. With that, the visitors led by three, 5-2, before Thomas Lynde scored off an assist from Pat DiMento late in the first quarter.

After another Albion goal, Sewanee finally got rolling. Goals from DiMento, Jake Chintz, McGuire, and two from Peter Brown, pushed the Tigers in front 8-6 with 4:23 left in the first half.

Albion answered again when Brandon Lebioda and Zach Hubbell each scored which tied the contest at 8-8 by halftime.

Over the next 15 minutes, Sewanee took over. The Tigers outshot Albion in the third quarter, 22-3. With that, Sewanee scored three goals, which pushed the home team in front 11-8.

Then midway through the fourth quarter, Lynde scored again off a great transition pass from DiMento. Eventually, a goal by Cameron Acuff sealed the victory after he raced around the crease and wrapped a shot around Albion keeper Trevor McManus.

Overall, the Tigers dominated in shots with a 66-22 advantage. Sewanee also finished with more groundballs and clears. Of the 25 Albion turnovers, nine were caused directly by the Tiger defense. Ian Marr led the defense with three CTs while George Pratt finished with a caused turnover and two groundballs. Cal Pierce also was a factor on defense with three two caused turnovers and three groundballs.

DiMento paced the offense with three goals, two assists, and three groundballs. Hunt and McGuire each finished with two goals while Brown added two goals, an assist, five groundballs, and one caused turnover.

In goal, senior Selby Austin stopped four shots while earning his third win. McManus led Albion with 23 saves while Drew Harm scored three times. 

Sewanee returns to action by hosting Skidmore for a 1:00 p.m., contest, Sunday.
