Oglethorpe's double-digit run production outmatches Sewanee in doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Story by student-athlete Ryan Tillman

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 25, 2017) — Aided by a strong showing from its hitters at the plate, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Oglethorpe scored 26 runs over two games to win the three-game series over the Sewanee baseball team, Saturday.

The Stormy Petrels earned a 12-7 win in the opener and then defeated the Tigers 14-1 at historic Montgomery Field in the second game.

Game One — Oglethorpe 12, Sewanee 7

Despite smashing two three-run homers in the third inning, Sewanee's bats were silenced by Oglethorpe starter Matt Davis and reliever Sam Traxler. Sewanee struggled on the mound, electing to use nine different pitchers, who gave up a combined 11 earned runs on 14 hits.

Riley Brandvold and Drew Mancuso showcased their power by belting pitches over the fence early in the game, each with two runners on base. Infielders Max Murray and Trey Akins also contributed with hits the same inning.

However, the Sewanee offensive firepower was contained and stymied when Oglethorpe responded with long balls of its own in the fifth and eighth innings. Matt Motz and Connor Crooke then hit back-to-back shots in the seventh.

Additionally, Jackson Cooper hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Game Two — Oglethorpe 14, Sewanee 1

Oglethorpe starting pitcher Caleb Felitus was brilliant over four innings of work, surrendering just one earned run while walking one and striking out three. The opposing pitching staff utilized three men in relief to close the victory. Combined, Stormy Petrel pitchers allowed just three hits over seven innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Mancuso's single advanced Beau Allen safely to third base. That setup Trey Akins's RBI opportunity. On the play, the sophomore executed his job and hit a sacrifice fly to the outfield, accounting for the only Tiger run of the game.

Oglethorpe right fielder Brandon Fish and designated hitter Adrian Celata combined for four home runs and five RBI, clobbering two dingers each. Catcher Bobby Rezac also proved to be a force at the plate, going 2-for-5 with four runs driven in.

Sewanee returns to action with a three-game series at Berry next weekend.
