A quick start leads No. 16 Lynchburg past Sewanee

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 24, 2017) – Playing against Lynchburg for the first time in the regular season, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-8 contest to the No. 16 Hornets under the lights of Shellenberger Field.

The previous two times Sewanee traveled to Lynchburg, the Hornets hosted the Tigers during the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Tournaments.

On Friday, the host Hornets got off to a quick start. Lynchburg led 6-2 by the end of the first quarter. Will Pratt and Jimmy Parker scored the two goals during the opening 15 minutes for Sewanee.

Lynchburg extended its advantage to 7-2 when Logan Adams scored early in the second quarter. Sewanee answered back as Tyler Calnan ripped in an unassisted goal less than a minute later.

Unfortunately, the Hornets scored the next four goals. Down 11-3, Sewanee finally got its offense going midway through the third quarter. Four straights goal, three from Peter Brown and one from Will Pratt, pulled the Tigers to within four, 11-7.

However, any chance of a comeback was quickly shutdown when Evan Lombardo and Kevin Rogers scored for the Hornets. Brown added one more goal before the Hornets netted two more scores with less than eight minutes to play.

Despite the goal differential, Sewanee managed to outshoot Lynchburg 39-35. The Tigers were edged by one, 35-34, in groundballs and did have one more turnover than the Hornets.

Sewanee specialists Ryan Stubits and Cason Liles combined to win 14-of-27 faceoffs.

Additionally, Brown finished with four goals, two assists, 11 shots, and two groundballs while Pratt added two goals and three shots. On defense, Tristan Robinson finished with one caused turnover and four groundballs. Along with Brown and Robinson, Stubits, Cameron Acuff, Grant Gilmore, George Pratt, Liles, Ben Griffin, and Thomas Lynde all had multiple groundballs.

Goalkeeper Selby Austin finished with 13 saves while CJ Santora earned the win for Lynchburg after he stopped nine shots.

Sewanee returns to action with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Birmingham-Southern, March 31.
