Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. (March 22, 2017) – A big second half led host Hampden-Sydney to a 12-6 win over the Sewanee men's lacrosse team, Wednesday, at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 4-4 this season. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improved to 7-3 overall.
Sewanee led early in the contest after first quarter goals from Hayden Hunt and Ben Griffin. The score remained in favor of the purple and gold until 13:33 left in the second. Duncan Morris scored back-to-back goals, which gave Hampden-Sydney a 3-2 advantage.
From there, Sewanee briefly tied the contest at 3-3 after a goal from Tyler Calnan. However, any momentum was short lived as Hampden-Sydney scored four of the next five goals. The lone Tiger goal during that stretch game from Jimmy Parker at 7:56.
In the final two quarters HSC outscored Sewanee, 5-2. After four straight goals from Ian Levin, and one from Connor Pool, Calnan added Sewanee's first goal in the final 30 minutes when he found the back of the net with 4:36 to play. Pat DiMento added a late goal for Sewanee with the Tigers up a man with 1:16 left.
Overall, HSC edged Sewanee in shots, 40-39. Sewanee did finish with an advantage in groundballs (29-27) and had fewer turnovers. HSC goalkeeper Mitch Renfrow, who finished with 15 saves, played a large role in the win for the home team.
Hunt led Sewanee with a goal, eight shots, and two groundballs. Stewart Roddey also played well with seven groundballs while Ryan Stubits added seven groundballs and 11 faceoff wins.
Levin paced HSC with six goals, two assists, and 11 shots.
Sewanee returns to action with a 7:00 p.m. (EST) match at Lynchburg, Friday.
