Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 29, 2017) Behind a great defensive effort, visiting Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern earned a 67-62 win over the Sewanee men's basketball team, Sunday, inside Juhan Gymnasium.

The Panthers limited Sewanee to a 37.5 field goal percentage. The Tigers also struggled from beyond the three-point line going 7-for-27 (25.9 percent).

On the other side of the court, BSC made 44 percent of its shots, which included 20 points from leading scorer James McLean.

Sewanee got off to a slow start after BSC raced out to a quick 8-0 lead. However, the Tigers answered back midway through the first half. A jumper by Jorden Williams sparked a 10-2 spurt by the Tigers. With the score tied at 18-18, Harrison Deneka hit a three for BSC. The Panthers never trailed again.

The score remained close until midway through the second half. BSC used an 11-4 run to open the final 20 minutes. That helped the Panthers take a 43-29 lead with 16 minutes to play.

Sewanee did manage to pull to within four, 50-46, after another Williams three. Unfortunately, BSC answered back by scoring eight of the next 10 points.

Down seven with under a minute to play, Sewanee did not quit. The Tigers pulled to within a possession after a Brody Stone layup with seven seconds remaining. However, Evan Lewis hit both ensuing free throws, which sealed the BSC win.

Individually, Williams led Sewanee with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting. The senior guard from Chattanooga, Tenn., is now tied with Turner Emory (1995-98) for the most three-point shots made in a career. Williams and Emory both have 260 makes.

Sophomore Cam Caldwell also played well with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. That was Caldwell's first-ever double-double.

Along with McLean, Deneka led BSC with 20 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

The Tigers return to action with an 8:00 p.m. contest against Berry, Friday.
