Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 25, 2016) – Down 1-0 late in the game, visiting St. Mary's rallied for a 2-1 win in overtime Sunday over the Sewanee field hockey team at Puett Field.
Early in the contest, Sewanee played well. The Tigers led 8-4 in shots and by a 5-3 margin in corners at halftime.
Unfortunately, St. Mary's adjusted early in the second half. The Seahawks finished with 16 second-half shots while finishing with 12 corners in the final 35 minutes of regulation.
Despite not holding possession the majority of the second half, Sewanee did score first. With just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Virginia Barry picked up a loose ball and fired a shot that was initially sent in and hit the post by Carrie Anderson.
However, St. Mary's quickly answered back. The Seahawks score a minute later when Carly Todd received a corner pass and dribbled past a Tiger defender before firing in the equalizer.
In overtime, both teams had a few early chances to score before Megan Moore tipped a loose ball in for the game-winning goal.
Individually, Anderson and freshman Ceara Caffrey led the attack with four shots each. Emily Sloan, Katie Wilson, and Barry all added two shots while Katya Waters finished with nine saves in 76 minutes in goal.
Sewanee will now play two straight Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matches starting at Rhodes next Saturday.
