Second-half surge pushes rival Rhodes past Sewanee

Box Score

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 23, 2016)  Despite an outstanding effort, the Sewanee field hockey team could not hold off rival Rhodes on a hot Puett Field Friday afternoon, as the Lynx surged past the Tigers, 3-1.

Early on, both teams battled back and forth. In a fast-paced first half, Sewanee managed to edge Rhodes in shots 9-8.  However, despite numerous chances for both teams to score, both defenses and goalkeepers, Katya Waters (Sewanee) and Laura Eckelkamp (Rhodes), were outstanding.

With just over 41 minutes off the clock, Rhodes finally broke the scoreless tie when Lauren Travis tipped in a rebound shot that was sent toward Waters from Christina Difelice.

After the ensuing start of play, Sewanee quickly answered back. Less than a minute later, senior Carrie Anderson ripped a pass in the circle on a fast break. From there, junior Virginia Barry found Anderson's pass and fired in the equalizer with 42:09 on the clock.

Unfortunately, Rhodes used its possession to retake the lead 20 minutes later. Similar to Sewanee's goal, the Lynx were able to take advantage of a Sewanee turnover at midfield. From there, Travis showed off her speed taking a pass at the attacking third and racing past Waters and one Tiger defender for the game-winner.

Two minutes later, Rhodes scored again. After a Tiger foul, Rhodes sent a hard pass into the circle. From there, Travis found Lizzie Wood for the final goal with less than five minutes to remaining.

Overall, Rhodes outshot the Tigers by 10, 22-12. The majority of that margin came in the second half when the Lynx added 14 shots to Sewanee's three attempts.

Despite the shots, Sewanee's defense did play well. The backline and midfield of Nikki Ereli, Catherine Estes, Jo Jo Young, Devon Davis, Madison McAdams, and Hannah Tompkins all cleared numerous loose possessions out of the circle.

Waters also played well with eight saves in 70 minutes of action.

On offense, Anderson led the Tigers in shots with four attempts. Ceara Caffrey and Virginia Barry also added two.

The Tigers will now take a day off before returning to action with a 10:00 a.m. match against St. Mary's, Sunday.
