Box Score 2 ATLANTA (April 9, 2016) – The Sewanee baseball team dropped a pair of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) road games at Oglethorpe, Saturday, at Anderson Field.
The Stormy Petrels opened the series with a 6-2 win. OU then took the second game by a score of 6-5 in extra innings.
Game One – OU 6 --- Sewanee 2
After Oglethorpe scored a run in each of the first two innings, Adrian Celata hit a grand slam that pushed the Stormy Petrels ahead, 6-0.
Sewanee finally got on the board in the top of the ninth. After Trey Akins singled, Drew Mancuso drew a walk. Two batters later Bryce Benedict also drew a walk which loaded the bases with one out.
Tyler Minkkinen then got another walk that brought in Akins.
After OU brought in reliever Sam Traxler, Tony Dykes drove in Mancuso with a single through the left side.
Unfortunately, Traxler then got Derek Hullings to line out and Josh Roberts to fly out to left.
Overall, Dykes led the offense with a 2-for-4 performance.
Celata led OU going 3-for-4 with two extra base hits, four RBI, and a run scored.
Despite his trouble in the ninth, OU starter Matt Davis earned the win after he allowed two runs on five hits while striking out eight in 8.1 innings.
Sewanee starter Ryan Tillman was charged with the loss after he gave up six runs in 6.2 innings.
Game Two – OU 6 --- Sewanee (9 innings)
With OU ahead 4-0 heading into the final inning, Sewanee rallied in the top of the seventh. With one out, Hunter Creech singled to right center. After Ryan Poole singled to second, Creech advanced another base on a throwing error.
A batter later, Benedict drove in Creech with an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
Later in the inning, with two outs, Akins drove in Poole with a key RBI single.
Benedict then scored on a wild pitch by Traxler. Still during the same at-bat, Hullings scored a second wild pitch.
Akins then scored when the OU third baseman had a throwing error trying to end the inning.
Sewanee had a chance to end the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, however Brandon Fish double to left center which scored Alex Atteberry.
The score remained 5-5 until the bottom of the ninth. With one out and a runner on third, Austin Ferlita singled in Celata for the walk-off win.
Both Akins and Poole led the offense with three hits. That included a double by each.
On the mound, Sewanee starter J.T. Hintzen pitched well going 5.0 innings while allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out seven.
Minkkinen took the loss after he allowed four hits and two runs the final 2.1 innings.
OU reliever Justin Thigpen earned the win after he allowed only a hit in the top of the ninth.
