Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 22, 2016) – The Sewanee men's lacrosse team earned a spot in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championship match for the fourth straight season, Friday, as the Tigers defeated rival Birmingham-Southern, 11-4, at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
The Tigers won for the 11th time this season. Sewanee has now won eight straight matches since March 14th.
Sewanee opened the match by outscoring the Panthers 5-1 in the first quarter. After Hayden Hunt gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead, BSC answered back with a goal from David Thompson. Sewanee responded with four straight goals from Jimmy Parker, Cotter Brown, and Tristan Robinson.
Sewanee then extended its lead to 6-1 midway through the second quarter when Pat DiMento found the back of the net off an assist from Hunt.
After back-to-back BSC goals pulled the Panthers to within three, 6-3, with 14:07 left in the third, Sewanee took advantage of a key three-minute non-releasable penalty. Over the next few possessions, Sewanee scored goals by Hunt, Thomas Lynde, and Robbie Berndt. Those goals allowed Sewanee to pull ahead by six, 9-3, by the end of the quarter.
In the final 15 minutes, Sewanee outscored the Panthers 2-1. The Tigers had late goals by Tyler Calnan and Brooks Young.
Overall, Sewanee outshot BSC 38-27 and also led in groundballs 36-23.
Individually, Parker and Hunt led Sewanee with two goals each. The balanced Tigers had 10 players with at least one point.
In goal, Selby Austin finished with nine saves.
David Arnold paced BSC with two goals on six shots.
Sewanee will play the winner of the Centre/Berry semifinal.
