Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. (April 2, 2016) – Led by its pitching, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Millsaps won a doubleheader against the Sewanee baseball team, Saturday, at Twenty Field.
The Majors opened the day with a 6-5 win and then won the second game at 1-0.
Game One – Millsaps 6 – Sewanee 5
Starter Greg Matthews allowed two runs (one earned) and only four hits while striking out four in 6.0 innings. Despite having a non-decision, Millsaps built an early 2-0 lead behind its starter.
In the bottom of the second, Connor Woodal singled in Andy Page. Seth Trulock then had a SAC bunt to the pitcher, which scored Cavan Breland.
The score remained at 2-0 until the top of the seventh. With no outs, Drew Mancuso singled in Beau Allen. During the next at-bat, Trey Akins scored on a passed ball.
An inning later, Sewanee took a 5-2 lead when Jackson Cooper, Mancuso, and Kyle Schnell all drove in runs.
Unfortunately, Millsaps took back the lead when Breland drove in Isaac Glenn with an out in the bottom of the eighth. Woodal then singled in Lee Ogletree which pulled the Majors to within one.
With Millsaps down 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Andy Page hit a walk-off single ,which scored two to end the game.
Mancuso led Sewanee at the plate with a hit and two RBI. Sewanee starter Ryan Tillman pitched well going 6.0 innings and allowing only two runs. Tillman also struck out one.
Game Two – Millsaps 1 – Sewanee 0
Starter Daniel Adams earned the win for the Majors after he allowed only two hits in 6.0 scoreless innings. Adams struck out four while walking two. Reliever Chris Guerin earned his third save after he struck out one and allowed no hits in the seventh.
Akins and Ryan Poole had a hit each for the Tigers. Sewanee starter J.T. Hintzen did pitch well despite earning the loss. Hintzen struck out seven in 6.0 while allowing only four hits.
Both teams wrap up the three-game series with a noon game, Sunday.
