Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 17, 2016) – The Sewanee baseball team earned a 9-6 victory over Southern Athletic Association (SAA) member Centre, Sunday, to win its first conference series this spring at historic Montgomery Field.
The Tigers won the rubber game after both teams split a doubleheader on Saturday. The win is the first SAA series victory for the Tigers since Sewanee won two of three at Hendrix in 2015.
Like they did all weekend, Sewanee got off to an incredible start. The Tigers scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. Pitcher Drew Mancuso drove in Jackson Cooper with an RBI SAC fly while Tyler Minkkinen cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to left center.
An inning later, the Tigers added to their lead. This time, freshman Trey Akins tripled in Beau Allen with two outs.
The Tigers extended their advantage to 8-0 in the bottom of the fourth. With two runners on, Cooper singled in Derek Hullings. With the play still live, Josh Roberts then scored when Centre committed a throwing error.
A batter later, Allen drove in Cooper with an RBI SAC fly to right.
After Centre added three runs in the top of the fifth, Sewanee answered back in the bottom of the sixth. Again with two outs, Akins crushed a pitch to the outfield, which scored Roberts.
Centre did add a run in the eighth and two in the ninth before Minkkinen finally got the third out to end the game.
Overall, Akins finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run score. Tony Dykes, Cooper, Hullings, and Roberts all had multiple hits.
On the mound, Mancuso earned the win after he struck out four and allowed seven hits in 5.1 innings.
With its regular season wrapped up, Sewanee will now open the SAA Tournament next weekend at No. 1 seed Birmingham-Southern.
