Baseball splits with Centre

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 16, 2016) – The Sewanee baseball split a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) doubleheader with rival Centre Saturday at historic Montgomery Field.

The Tigers won the first game 9-7 while the Colonels earned a 7-3 victory in the second contest.

Game One: Sewanee 9 --- Centre 7

The Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Ryan Poole drove in Tony Dykes with a single to left. Later in the inning Derek Hullings singled in Poole before he was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double.

After Centre scored four runs on two hits in the top of the third, Sewanee answered back in a big way in the bottom of the fifth.

Jackson Cooper opened the offensive spurt with a two-RBI double to center field. After Cooper stole third, the ensuing throw sailed over the head of the Colonel third baseman and Cooper scored.

Later in the inning, Dykes drove in Trey Akins with an RBI SAC fly to center.

Poole and Tyler Minkkinen then doubled home three more runs before the Tigers were retired.

After Centre scored two runs in the seventh, the Colonels had the tying run up to plate in the top of the ninth. However, Minkkinen got Greyson Evan to fly out to left to end the game.

Overall, Poole finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Cooper, Beau Allen, Dykes, Minkkinen, and Hullings also each had two hits.

On the mound, reliever Ryan Tillman earned the win after he allowed only three runs and five hits while striking out three in 5.0 innings of work.

Game Two: Centre 7 --- Sewanee 3

Sewanee's bats stayed hot early as the Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the first. After Cooper hit another double to open the inning, Akins drove in the Tiger third baseman with a double to center. Dykes then drove in Akins with a single.

Unfortunately, Sewanee did not score again until the bottom of the seventh when Dykes doubled home Allen.

During the stretch in which Sewanee failed to score, Centre scored seven runs on 11 hits.

Sewanee starter J.T. Hintzen was charged with the loss after he allowed seven runs on 10 hits while striking out five in 5.1 innings. After a rough start, Centre's Rob Caudill settled in and allowed only two runs and eight hits while striking out eight in 6.0 innings.

At the plate, Cooper, Dykes, and Minkkinen again led the Tigers with two hits each.

Centre shortstop Grant Herald led the Colonels with a 2-for-3 performance and two RBI.

Both teams will try to win the series with the rubber game on Sunday.
