Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. (March 6, 2016) – Despite outhitting Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes 12-8 and battling back from a 3-0 deficit, the Sewanee baseball team dropped a 6-5 game at Stauffer Field to the Lynx.
The win for Rhodes gave the Lynx a three-game sweep of the Tigers.
Down 3-0 heading into the top of the sixth, Sewanee got its offense rolling. After Tyler Minkkinen singled to left with one out, Tony Dykes ripped a single to center field two batters later.
Then with the bases loaded, Drew Mancuso drove in two with a two-RBI single to right center.
A batter later, Derek Hullings drove in Mancuso from third after the Tiger first baseman advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Unfortunately, Rhodes retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and a single run in the seventh.
Down 6-4 heading into the top of the ninth, Sewanee did not go quietly. With two outs and no one on base, Trey Akins crushed his first career homerun to left field to pull the Tigers to within one.
A batter later Josh Roberts doubled to left center. However, after Rhodes brought in Daniel Kurtzer, the Lynx closer got Minkkinen to strike out looking.
Overall, Sewanee outhit Rhodes 12-8. The Tigers also had two doubles and two stolen bases.
Individually, Akins, Roberts, and Mancuso each added two hits. Despite allowing six runs and eight hits, Tiger starter J.T. Hintzen, who took the loss, struck out eight.
Rhodes starter Jack Mercer earned the win after he allowed four runs (zero earned) and struck out five in 6.0 innings.
Sewanee will look to win its second game of the season against ODAC member Hampden-Sydney at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday.
