Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 5, 2016) – Despite an outstanding effort, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team dropped a 9-4 match at No. 17 Denison, Saturday, at Piper Stadium.
The Tigers are now 2-2 while the Big Red improved 3-1.
The home red and white jumped out in front early behind three quick goals from Jamie McCahan and Owen Armstrong.
Sewanee answered back as Hayden Byrd and Hayden Hunt both scored to pull the Tigers to within one, 3-2, by the end of the first quarter.
Denison pushed its lead back to three after James Meager and Blair Fairholt added goals. Sewanee then stopped the scoring streak when Baylor Koch scored with 8:16 left in the second quarter. Meager then added one more score for Denison to close the half.
After no goals in the third quarter, Meager and Josh Happ pushed the Big Red lead to five, 8-3, with 8:19 left to play.
A goal by Peter Brown cut the Tiger deficit to four less than a minute later. Armstrong then scored one final goal after Denison won the next faceoff.
Despite the final outcome, the stats were even as Denison edged Sewanee in shots 36-34. The Big Red led Sewanee in ground balls 26-25 while the Tigers won 11-of-17 faceoffs.
Sewanee returns to action at SAA rival Centre on March 12th.
