Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 23, 2016) – Five goals from freshman Hayden Hunt helped the Sewanee men's lacrosse team to a 13-5 win over Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern, Sunday, at Krulak Stadium.
The Tigers have now won four straight matches and have a 7-3 overall record. More importantly, Sewanee has a perfect 4-0 SAA record with three home league matches remaining. All three SAA contests will be played at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
Sewanee opened the match with three straight goals in the first period. Hunt, Robbie Berndt, and Cotter Brown all scored which gave the Tigers an early 3-0 lead.
After Birmingham-Southern got on the board to start the second, sophomore Jimmy Parker ripped in an unassisted shot in the 13:00 minute. Later in the second, attackman Pat DiMento scored off a pass by Cotter Brown, which extended the Sewanee advantage to 5-1.
BSC answered back with two goals before halftime to pulled to within two, 5-3, at the break.
Out of the locker room, Sewanee quickly put the match away. Three straight goals by Hunt pushed the Tigers' lead to five, 8-3.
After two BSC goals, Berndt found Wil Rainer with 2:26 left in the period which pushed Sewanee's lead back to four.
The Tigers then outscored the Panthers 4-0 the final 15:00 minutes of the match. During that stretch, Hunt, Cotter Brown, Thomas Lynde, and DiMento all scored.
Overall, Sewanee outshot BSC 42-30. The Tigers also had more clears (23-20) and groundballs (36-23) than the Panthers.
Along with Hunt, Brown finished with two goals and an assist while DiMento (two goals), Parker (one goal/two assists), Berndt (one goal/two assists), and Lynde (one goal/one assist) all finished with multiple points.
On defense, Sewanee keeper Selby Austin earned the win after he stopped 10 shots. Additionally, Joe Randazzo forced two caused turnovers while Wil Friedman led the Tigers with six groundballs.
McHale Schneider led BSC with two goals on five shots.
Sewanee returns to action this Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. match against Berry.
