SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 19, 2016) – Behind strong starts from Stephen Himic and Ryan Gaines, No. 2 ranked Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern swept a pair of games against the Sewanee baseball team, Saturday, at historic Montgomery Field.

The visiting Panthers won the opener 10-3 and then took the second game of the doubleheader 7-1.

Game 1 – BSC 10 – Sewanee 3

Behind Gaines, the Panthers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead by the end of fourth innings.

After not having a baserunner reach the first four innings, Sewanee finally got to the BSC starter in the bottom of the fifth. After a leadoff single by Tony Dykes, Drew Mancuso singled.

Ryan Poole then singled home Dykes with no outs. After Gaines got the next two Tigers to strike out swinging, Kyle Schnell ripped a two-RBI double to pull Sewanee to within a run.

Unfortunately, BSC answered back in the next half inning with three runs on four hits.

Eventually, the Panthers added two key insurance runs in the top of the ninth when Sam Roberts singled in Matt Brown and Taylor McCracken.

Overall, Gaines tossed 7.0 innings and struck out nine which improved his overall record to 6-0.

BSC reliever John Michael Shirley allowed only one hit the final two innings.

Along with his RBI double, Schnell led the Tigers at the plate going 2-for-4.

Game 2 – BSC 7 – Sewanee 1

After Schnell stayed hot and tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI triple in the bottom of the second, BSC starter Himic settled in the next four innings. Along with earning his fourth win, Himic allowed a run and four hits in 6.0 innings while striking out three.

BSC reliever Jake Cook struck out one in the seventh while allowing one hit.

Overall, six BSC hitters finished with a hit while five had at least one RBI.

Both teams will wrap up the series on Sunday in Sewanee.
