Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. (March 12, 2016) – Down three, 7-4, at halftime, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team rallied for a 10-9 win at Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Centre, Saturday, at Farris Stadium.
With the victory, Sewanee is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league action. The Colonels dropped to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in SAA play.
After Seth Gray scored for Centre early, sophomore Robbie Berndt netted an unassisted goal with 4:32 left in the first quarter. The Colonels answered back with two goals to close the first.
Sewanee began the second quarter with three straight goals. Brooks Young, Berndt, and Peter Brown all scored to push Sewanee in front 4-3 with 8:14 to play in the first half.
Less than four minutes later, Centre got its offense rolling again. The Colonels scored four straight goals to close the second quarter. During that stretch, Seth Gray, Matt Hughes, Leland Gray, and Lorenzo Powell all scored.
The Colonels then pushed their advantage to four, 8-4, to start the third quarter when Joe Lencewicz fired in a goal at the 12:56 mark.
Needing to rally midway through the third, Sewanee did just that. Tristan Robinson ripped in a shot with 5:12 left. That sparked a 5-0 run by the Tigers. After Robinson, Jimmy Parker, Hayden Hunt, Pat DiMento, and Berndt all scored.
After Berndt's third goal with 9:05 to play, Centre tied the score at 9-9 when Gray netted another goal for the black and gold.
However, with 3:36 left senior All-SAA player Cotter Brown scored the game-winning goal with 3:36 to play.
Overall, Sewanee outshot Centre 51-31. The Tigers also won more faceoffs and had more groundballs. Centre countered with more clears while keeper Samuel Long finished with 14 saves.
Individually, Berndt finished with three goals on 11 shots. Peter Brown added a goal and two assists while Parker finished with one goal and one assist.
In goal, junior Selby Austin finished with eight saves.
Gray led the Centre offense with three goals and two assists.
Sewanee returns to action on Monday against Frostburg State at Johns Hopkins University at 6:00 p.m. (EST).
